Litterial Green Named Head Coach of Steamers

July 18, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Chattanooga Steamers News Release

Chattanooga, TN-7/18/05-Litterial Green, former University of Georgia star and N.B.A. player was selected as head coach of the Chattanooga Steamers professional basketball club today, according to John Tyner, President of the newest A.B.A. expansion team.

Green, 35, is a native of Pascagoula, MS, and attended Moss Point High School. Recruited by the University of Georgia, he set and holds records in five categories from his time at the school, including career points (2,111), career assists (466), and field goal attempts (1,611). After declaring for the 1992 N.B.A. draft, he was selected in the second round by the Chicago Bulls. He then played his first two seasons with the Orlando Magic. Subsequently, Green played for the Detroit Pistons, Milwaukee Bucks, and the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Green moved to coaching after retiring as a player. In 2003, he was hired by the World Basketball Association's Southern Crescent Lightning, and was awarded Coach of the Year honors after leading the team to its first championship season. Green is also a co-founder of the "Practice with the Pro's Basketball Camp," and is the current director of the Junior Street Ball Association, an organization dedicated to conducting youth basketball camps and clinics.

John Tyner, president of the Steamers, first approached Green about the head coaching job in early May, calling Green "...the ideal choice for our inaugural season." Negotiations with Green carried through June and the first week of July. Last week, Tyner and Green came to a tentative agreement.

The choosing of Green as head coach is timely; the Steamers announced last week that tryouts will be held at Maclellan Gymnasium on August 20-21, on the campus of the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. "Litterial should have time to deal with the dozens of tryout applications that we have received over the past week," said Tyner. By July 15th, the Steamers had already received 36 applications for its Chattanooga camp.

The Steamers are part of the recently named Spencer Haywood Division of the American Basketball Association, which also includes teams in Nashville, Atlanta, Orlando, and Miami. For further information regarding the Chattanooga Steamers, contact John Tyner at john@teamtyner.com.
