COLUMBUS, GA (Mar. 7, 2008) - The Columbus Lions of the American Indoor Football Association conducted their final practice of training camp on Thursday and now begin preparing for their first game at Augusta on March 13.
Thursday night marked the end of training camp and left the coaching staff feeling nostalgic over the past couple of weeks. Whether it was watching the route running of local sports talk show host, Rachel Baribeau, or the high intensity scrimmages, those who participated will most certainly remember this year's camp.
Since the start of training camp, the coaches have really been impressed with the defense being so far ahead of the offense. "Its important that our defense be ahead of our offense, with all that talent on that side of the ball we expected that to happen," says Head Coach Jason Gibson. Roderick Marshall (5'11 240, Linebacker, Alabama St.) has been one of those newcomers that have impressed the coaching staff with his intensity and the fact that he is always around the ball.
Newcomer Elbert Shumake II (6'2 322, Defensive Line, Pikeville College) practiced with the club for the first time on Thursday. "He definitely is going to make a difference, our D-line just got better with his presence," says Coach Gibson.
The players will get to enjoy Friday and Saturday off before returning to practice on Sunday at 1. The team will be hitting the turf at The Columbus Civic Center for the first time this season as they prepare for their first game.
