Columbus Lions News Release
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Lions of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) are still searching for their first win away from their home turf after a 73-53 loss on Saturday night against the Alabama Hammers in Propst Arena in Huntsville. With the loss, the Lions fall to .500 at 3-3 and are tied with the Georgia Fire for second place in the American Conference, one game behind the 4-2 Nashville Venom. Columbus will try again for their first road win of the season when they visit Nashville next Sunday afternoon, May 25.
The Lions actually scored before a second ran off the clock as Craig Camay nailed an uno on the opening kickoff of the game. After that, however, quarterback Russell Hill went to work for the Hammers, showing the form that helped lead Alabama to last season's PIFL championship. Hill completed 21 of his 30 passes, six for touchdowns, for a total of 370 yards in the ballgame as the Hammers' offense set a PIFL season high for points in a game. Four of Hill's touchdown passes went to receiver Mico McSwain, who led all receivers with 162 yards on nine catches. Jeremy Grier caught one touchdown pass for the Hammers, while former Lion Maurice Dupree also had a receiving touchdown for Alabama.
The loss spoiled another great offensive effort from Kendrick Perry, the Lions' Offensive Player of the Game. Perry finished with 161 combined yards on the night; he rushed for 68 yards and two scores while also picking up 93 receiving yards and a pair of receiving TDs. The bulk of Perry's receiving yardage came from his two touchdown receptions as he was able to break both for big scoring plays of 40 and 45 yards. Jarmon Fortson led all Lions' receivers with 107 yards on four receptions and a pair of touchdowns. Quarterback Antwon Young finished the game 12 for 33 through the air for 294 yards and four touchdowns.
Lions defensive back Roshawn Marshall was the Defensive Player of the Game for Columbus as he had an interception and stripped the ball from an Alabama receiver early in the fourth quarter, returning it for a touchdown. Kicker Craig Camay also had a big night on special teams, nailing a pair of unos in the contest, going 6 for 6 on extra points, and also kicking a 24-yard field goal late in the first half.
Plenty of great seats are still available for the Lions' remaining home schedule. After they face the division-leading Nashville Venom in the Music City on May 25, they will return home to face the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks on May 31, the first of three consecutive Saturday home games inside "The Jungle."
