Columbus Lions News Release
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Lions of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) announce today they have signed fullback Kendrick Perry for the 2014 season. Perry comes to Columbus as the PIFL's all-time leader in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. He has played parts of the last four seasons as a member of the now-defunct Louisiana Swashbucklers.
Perry, 27, is no stranger to long-time Lions fans as he has been on the other side of the field several times in Louisiana, including the 2010 SIFL Championship Game that Columbus won over the Bucs. As a member of the offense for Louisiana in the PIFL, Perry is the league's career leader in rushing yards (711) and rushing touchdowns (26). The 6'2", 245-pound native of Amite, La. also played collegiately in his home Pelican State for Southeastern Louisiana in 2006 and was recruited and signed by Ole Miss in 2005.
Perry knows that his role is a unique one as a star fullback in a league and game that features passing.
"I just treat it like the outside game; I know it's a passing league, but when I do have the chance to carry the ball, it helps open up the passing game since most teams play a pass defense and then have to respect the running game too," Perry said.
He found himself without a team after the Swashbucklers folded last season, but Lions head coach Jason Gibson made sure Perry had a place to play in the upcoming season.
"After the [Swashbucklers] folded, I got a call from Coach Gibson. I told him if I decided to play, the Lions would be the first team I'd consider," said Perry.
Perry also joins an offensive backfield that will feature quarterback Antwon Young, who was second in the PIFL to Perry in rushing as a member of the Richmond Raiders in 2012.
"I definitely feel with Antwon and I in the backfield it'll be a big threat; it'll be tough to stop both of us. With us and the other guys the Lions have signed, it can't help but make the team better."
"Kendrick has without a doubt been the best running back in our league over the past few seasons," said Lions head coach Jason Gibson. "He is a serious upgrade to our backfield and should help elevate our red zone offense from last year."
The 2014 season looks to be the best one yet for the Lions. The home opener is on Saturday, April 5 against the Richmond Raiders. The contest will also mark the 100th game in Lions franchise history. Season tickets and corporate sponsorships are available now by contacting the Lions office at 706.332.3336.
