Columbus Lions News Release
Columbus, GA, January 11 -- Another solid Division 1-A and Atlantic Coast Conference player signed with the Columbus Lions today, as the new World Indoor Football League team landed 6'2", 280-lb. defensive tackle Omar Billy of Georgia Tech.
Lions Head Coach Jason Gibson said his staff had been trying for months to sign Billy, who is working out this weekend for the Arena Football league Nashville Kats. "Omar has great quickness with his hands and can get upfield. He'll be a dominant player in this league (WIFL) and another university graduate who adds to our team IQ" said Gibson.
Billy, an Orlando, Fla, native, played in 23 games for the Yellow Jackets from 2001-05, including a hardship granted by the NCAA for 2001, enabling him to play a fifth season. In his senior year, he was credited with five tackles, including two for loss. He made a key play in Georgia Tech's win at 16th-ranked Auburn when he pressured the quarterback enough to draw a holding call that nullified a touchdown.
In 2004, Billy played in six games, including the Champs Sports Bowl, and in 2003, he recorded a sack and a forced fumble in the Humanitarian Bowl against Tulsa. His high school honors included being named first-team all-Central Florida by the Orlando Sentinel and Orange County Defensive Player of the Year at Orlando's Colonial High School.
The Lions' preseason roster is now at 33 players and nearly complete as Gibson and his assistants prepare for the opening of training camp on February 5. Three weeks later, the Lions open the regular season at Daytona Beach (February 26), and the home opener at the Columbus Civic Center is March 10 at 7:00 p.m.
