July 2, 2014 - Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL)
Columbus Lions News Release
COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Lions of the Professional Indoor Football League (PIFL) announce that quarterback Luke Halpin is the Week 14 recipient of the league's Offensive Player of the Week award. Halpin joins wide receiver Earl Alexander (week 3), running back Kendrick Perry (week 11), and quarterback Antwon Young (week 5) as Lions players who have won the award in previous weeks this season; Columbus defensive back Damian Daniels also received Player of the Week honors on the defensive side of the ball in week 3.
Starting in just his third pro game, Halpin had a very efficient night behind center for the Lions in their 69-55 win last Friday on the road over the Georgia Fire. Halpin finished Friday's game 18 of 25 passing for 204 yards and five touchdowns before being spelled by backup Barry Brunetti in the fourth quarter. Halpin also scored a touchdown himself on a one-yard quarterback keeper.
A rookie quarterback out of Arkansas Tech, Halpin was pressed into action for the Lions in his first pro game on June 14 against the American Conference champion Nashville Venom. Halpin finished 15 of 24 passing for 145 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in a heartbreaking 60-56 loss to the Venom, the Lions' only home loss of the season. Although Halpin was the signal caller in Columbus's lone home loss, he has also been the only quarterback to lead the Lions to a road win this season. Besides Friday's win in Rome, Halpin was under center for the Lions' 69-31 win in Huntsville on June 21 against the Alabama Hammers. In that game, he was 18 of 28 passing for three touchdowns and 235 total yards.
The 5'11", 175-pound Halpin hails from Mesquite, Texas. He began his collegiate career at West Texas A&M University and went a combined 43 of 61 passing in 2011 and 2012 prior to transferring to Arkansas Tech.
Halpin appeared in ten games and started seven for Arkansas Tech as a redshirt junior in 2013, completing 164 of 249 passes for 1,597 yards and eight touchdowns.
Halpin and the Lions head to the Music City next Saturday, July 5th, for an 8 PM EDT playoff matchup against the American Conference champion Nashville Venom. The winner of that game will face the National Conference champion the weekend of July 11th -13th for the PIFL championship.
