Lions Hit Open Road To Take On Stampede

COLUMBUS, GA (April 8, 2009) - Hot off their 82-19 win over the Baltimore Mariners last Saturday, the Columbus Lions (3-1) of the American Indoor Football Association hit the open road to take on the Harrisburg Stampede (1-2).
Lions, Stampede matchup bring together the old adage of good offense versus good defense. The Columbus offense is firing on all cylinders sporting the AIFA's 2nd best scoring offense (59 pts p/game) and the Stampede's defense allows the fewest points per game at 31.
The Columbus Lions defense comes off an impressive showing only allowing two touchdowns while creating eight turnovers last weekend. The Lions defense leads the AIFA in sacks with 14 and top the league in turnovers with 16. This doesn't bode well for Harrisburg led by quarterback A.J. Roque who leads the league in interceptions thrown and an offense that ranks last in red zone offense.
Lion's offense appears to be coming together leading the league in tops in red zone efficiency at 82 percent, thanks in large part to rookie running back Richard Fitzhugh's league leading 7 touchdown rushes. Rookie QB Bill Ashburn rebounded nicely from a poor Florence showing by completing 10 of 17 passes for 142 yards and 4 touchdowns against the Mariners.
"With the loss to Florence we learned a lot about some tendencies that needed to be fixed," says Head Coach Jason Gibson. "Even though this week is a short week due to travel, we are taking the same mentality and hopefully we can continue to put points on the board against a good Harrisburg defense."
After beating the Baltimore Mariners back in Week 4, the Stampede looked like an expansion team heading in the right direction. That was until last weekend when they ran into the South Carolina Force losing 40-37. The Force took advantage of a 10th ranked Stampede secondary that allows 194 yards per game.
The loss to the Force drops the Stampede record versus the south division to 0-2 with Columbus still to play.
