The Detroit Lions signed former arenafootball2 standout Reggie Swinton to be their returner on special teams on Monday. In 2001, Swinton played with the af2's Arkansas Twisters and in just 13 games; he grabbed 85 passes for 1,463 yards and 33 TDs.

He signed with the Dallas Cowboys following his standout season with the Twisters. In two-plus seasons with the Cowboys, he had 85 kickoff returns for 2,089 yards. He was selected as All-Rookie in 2001 after posting 56 kickoffs for 1,327 yards and 31 punts for 414 yards.

This season, Swinton returned three kickoffs for 65 yards with a long of 25 in one game with Dallas before the Cowboys traded him to the Green Bay Packers on Sept. 29. The Packers released him Thursday.

Swinton originally signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars as a rookie free agent in 1998 but was released at the end of training camp. He spent 1999 with the CFL's Winnipeg Bombers and Edmonton Eskimos; and played with Las Vegas of the XFL.

Set Murray State records for career receiving yards (2,346), career receptions (133) and single season yards (1,042). His 27 touchdowns ranks second all-time. He had 35 receptions for 642 yards during his senior season. He was named first team All-Conference and division 1-AA All-America as a junior.

Swinton was born July 24, 1975 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He earned all-state honors in baseball, basketball, football and track at Central High School. He was named the school's athlete of the year as a senior. He has two sons, Ryan and Reggie II.
