COLUMBUS, GA (January 1, 2010) - With the height of college bowl season upon us, the Columbus Lions of the Southern Indoor Football League signed linebacker Torry Cornett the anchor of the Cincinnati Bearcats defense that reached the BCS Orange Bowl in 2009.
As a senior at Independence High School, Torry Cornett (6'2 242, LB) earned All-State Honors in both football and basketball as a senior. After being heavily recruited by Cincinnati to play football, Cornett decided to begin his collegiate career as a basketball player at Prairie View A&M.
In one season as a guard with the Pirates Tony averaged 6.0 points and 2.8 rebounds. A native of Columbus, OH Cornett decided to switch sports and transfer to the school that recruited him to play football in Cincinnati so he could be closer to family and friends.
Early in his career at Cincinnati, Tony saw majority of action on special teams including earning Special Teams Player of the Week honors as a sophomore. As a senior, Cornett started all 14 games at linebacker collecting 69 tackles (42 solo) and one sack leading the Bearcats to their first Big East Conference title. During the 2008 season, the Bearcat defense ranked 26th in total defense while earning a trip to the 2009 BCS Orange Bowl.
"Part of having a great defense is having the athletes who can evenly match up with offensive playmakers," says Lions Head Coach Jason Gibson. "Torry has the chance to be a huge difference maker for us whether its getting after the quarterback or playing defensive back."
