Lindberg and Patrosso Score In Last 11 Minutes To Boost Port Huron

December 12, 2009 - International Hockey League 2 (IHL 2)
Port Huron Icehawks News Release

PORT HURON, MI - Port Huron Icehawks goaltender Larry Sterling made 23 saves on Saturday to shut out the Fort Wayne Komets 2-0 at McMorran Arena. The win gives the Icehawks a sweep of a home-and-home series with the Komets, which began with a 4-2 Port Huron win in Fort Wayne on Wednesday.

Sterling's big performance didn't stop between the pipes. He dropped the gloves with Komets goalie Tim Haun as the clock wound down in the third period, after Haun went after Icehawks forward Derek Patrosso.

The Icehawks special teams put on a show as well. Port Huron proved why they are the league's top team on the penalty kill, killing off seven penalties to leave the Komets empty handed on the power play. The Icehawks also scored their third shorthanded goal of the season and scored once on the power play.

The two teams were deadlocked in a defensive battle for the majority of the game. The first goal of the contest did not come until 9:22 in the third period, when Lindberg beat Haun shorthanded and unassisted. The Icehawks added an insurance goal in the final minute of play, as Patrosso capitalized on a five-on-three and scored at 19:09. Brandon Naurato and Daniel Tetrault assisted on the play.

The Icehawks outshot the Komets 25-23 overall. The shutout was the first of the season for both Sterling and the Icehawks, and the eighth of Sterling's career.

The Icehawks busy stretch continues tomorrow with a game in Muskegon at 5 p.m. They return home on Tuesday to battle the Flint Generals at 7 p.m. The Deuces Wild Package is available for this game and all Tuesday and Wednesday contests this season. Buy two tickets and two beers for just $22.
