
Lima Leads Bears to 5-3 Win in Opener over Ducks

NEWARK, N.J., June 8-Former major league twenty-game winner Jose Lima tossed a complete-game victory as the Newark Bears defeated the Long Island Ducks, 5-3, in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader at Riverfront Stadium.
Lima (6-1) allowed 3 runs on 8 hits in earning his league-leading 6th victory of the season. Lima struck out 6 batters and did not walk any. He now has two complete games on the season.
Trailing 3-2 in the 5th inning, the Bears scored 3 runs to gain the final margin of victory. Newark tied the game on third baseman Kevin Baez's fielding error and then took the lead on Francisco Lebron's sacrifice fly. Newark's Wil Quintana plated the third run of the inning with a two-out run-scoring single.
The Bears scored their first two runs of the game in the third inning of starter Mark Thompson (3-1), who took the loss for the Ducks. In the 3rd inning, Michael Coleman delivered a sacrifice fly to right field and Danny Clyburn clubbed a solo home run, his league-leading 9th of the season.
Rickey Henderson was 2-4 with a double for Newark. Patrick Lennon went 2-3 for Long Island; and teammate Jason Johnson was 2-3 with an RBI.
