Newark Bears News Release

NEWARK, N.J., June 8-The Newark Bears scored three runs in the 5th inning, the last two on Danny Clyburn's league-leading 10th home run, en-route to a 5-3 victory over the Long Island Ducks in the nightcap of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Riverfront Stadium. The Bears, who beat Long Island, 5-3, in the opener, swept the doubleheader and have now won three straight games and five of their last six.

The Bears entered the 5th inning trailing the Ducks, 3-2, before shortstop Eddy Martinez tied the game with a lead off home run, his third of the season. Later in the inning, with Mike Piercy on second base and two men out, Clyburn drilled a two-run home run over the wall in left-field off of reliever Joe Cotton. Clyburn, who hit a solo homer in the first game of the doubleheader, was 1-3 in the nightcap with his 10th home run and 3 RBI, as he also drove in a run in the first inning on a ground out.

Michael Coleman and Martinez both had two hits for the Bears in the nightcap. Coleman was 2-3 with a double and an RBI; while Martinez was 2-3 with his home run, RBI and 2 runs scored. Martinez has now hit safely in six straight games.

Al Hawkins (2-2) battled through five innings to pick up the win for the Bears. Hawkins allowed a season-high 6 walks to go along with three runs and six hits, but he pitched out of several jams, including two in which he registered a pair of ground ball double plays.

Damon Ponce de Leon struck out 2 batters in the final inning to earn his second save of the season.

Ducks shortstop Elvis Pena was 3-3 with a double, a walk and 2 RBI.

The Bears and Ducks will play the final game of their three-game series Monday night at 7:05 PM. Either Tom Stepka (2-2) or Tim Keinath (1-2) will start for Newark; while Long Island counters with right-hander Bryan Rekar (2-1).
