Newport Gulls News Release

LACONIA, N.H.- A light tower down the left field line went out in the top of the sixth inning at Robbie Mills Field in Laconia and the umpires called the game after a fifteen-minute delay, giving the Newport Gulls a 9-7 victory on the road in five innings.

The offending light tower eventually came back on within a half hour, but since it was an official game and had been called by the umpires, play did not resume, and the game went final after Muskrats general manager Noah Crane spoke with the league office.

Newport improves to 7-3 overall this season with the victory, while Laconia falls to 5-7 overall. The Gulls win on the road, combined with a New Bedford loss, propelled Newport into first place in the Eastern Division half a game ahead of the Bay Sox.

After a forty-eight minute rain delay prior to first pitch, Newport jumped on the board in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by first baseman Steve Anderson.

Laconia tagged Newport starter Jon Prosinski, an NECBL All-Star selection last season and one of five returning Gulls, for five runs (four earned) on six hits in two plus innings of work in his season debut.

Trailing 5-1, Newport rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth inning off Laconia starter John Healy and reliever Tim Swatek. Outfielder John Norwood's two-run homer, his first of the season, tied the game at 5-5 and shortstop Joel McKeithan hit a two-run blast, his first of the season as well, to cap the offensive explosion.

Laconia battled back in the bottom of the fifth inning against Newport reliever Ryan Pennell, who walked third baseman Donny Duschinsky to lead off the inning. Pennell struck out first baseman Tyler Jackson and catcher Ethan Bennett, but walked designated hitter Tim Swatek and left fielder Dylan Kelly to load the bases.

Frank Holbrook was called upon to put out the fire with the tying run at the plate and surrendered a two-run double to the first man he faced, second baseman Connor Castellano, before striking out pinch hitter Regan Flaherty to end the threat and preserve the lead.

Healy (0-1) took the loss in his season debut, while Pennell (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Gulls. Newport racked up 10 hits in the victory, with Anderson (2-for-3 with three RBI),Norwood (1-for-3 with a pair of RBI), McKeithan (1-for-2 with a pair of RBI) and newly acquired catcher Matt Pare (2-for-3 with two RBI) leading the offensive explosion.

Newport will be back in action taking on the Vermont Mountaineers at home on Monday, June 25. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/newportgulls, follow us on Twitter @NewportGulls, or visit our website www.newportgulls.com.
