Lightning's Weyland Says Team Confident Ahead of Cincinnati Clash

December 29, 2010 - Professional Arena Soccer League (PASL)
Louisville Lightning News Release

The Lightning's Lee Weyland played a major role in the team's late-game comeback against the San Diego Sockers last weekend. The Louisville native said despite the loss, the team performed much better against the Sockers at home last Friday. Weyland also said the team has momentum to build on heading into next weekend's clash with Cincinnati.

Lee Weyland was a key part of the Lightning's run in the second half that saw them rattle off five unanswered goals in the final moments against San Diego. However, Weyland almost didn't get to see it happen. The defender picked up a cut above his eye that sidelined him for several minutes. "I just collided with one of the players going for the ball, but it was pretty innocent contact," Weyland said. After returning to the game, he assisted the team in a second half run that saw the Lightning close the gap on the league champs. Weyland said his team has something to build on following their second meeting with San Diego this month.

"They're a more physical side," Weyland said of the Sockers. "I thought once we went to high-pressure at the end, we had a little more success. I don't think they controlled it as well at the end of the game when we put them under a lot of pressure. I thought that was what created a lot of our chances at the end of the game. I just wish we could have picked up some of that momentum early on," he said.

Despite the loss, Weyland said the team's performance improved in their second meeting with the Sockers this season. "I think we learned a lot tonight. I think given the game we had against San Diego two weeks ago, we made a lot of great strides and it was better tonight," he stated.

The Lightning now look ahead to a New Year's Day clash with the Cincinnati Kings on the road. Weyland said his team is feeling confident ahead of next Saturday's game. "I think we're going to continue to build on that success when we go up to Cincinnati to play them at their place on New Year's Day."
