Grand Rapids Hoops News Release

Albert White and Ronnie Fields combined for 27 fourth-quarter points for the Rockford Lightning, as they were able to topple the Grand Rapids HOOPS by the score of 117-111 Sunday night at the Rockford MetroCenter. Grand Rapids was able to earn just two of seven quarter points as the Lightning used a 27-10 run in the fourth quarter to erase an eight-point deficit.

Alex Scales led six HOOPS' players in double figures with 21 points (9-21 FG), while Olden Polynice registered 18 points (9-19 FG) and 17 rebounds. Jerald Honeycutt and Immanuel McElroy also added 14 points for the visitors.

Rockford (28-13) began a game of runs by scoring the first 13 points of the first quarter. Grand Rapids failed to connect on its first ten field goal attempts as they stumbled out to a 32-20 first quarter deficit.

The Lightning went ice-cold in the second quarter, however, as they missed 17 of their first 19 field goal attempts in the frame. Grand Rapids took advantage of the cold shooting by Rockford and cut the Lightning lead to 51-43 at the half. The teams combined on a dismal 40-104 field goal shooting effort in the first half.

Grand Rapids (18-21) went on a 14-2 run to take a 57-55 lead to begin the third quarter. The teams traded baskets for much of the remainder of the quarter, until Honeycutt and Lazarus Sims spurred on a 10-2 run to finish the quarter. The HOOPS held a 84-78 lead entering the fourth quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Lightning capitalized on several prolonged scoring droughts by the HOOPS as they enjoyed runs of 10-2 and 14-4. The duo of White and Fields was simply too much as Grand Rapids dropped their record to 2-7 against the Lightning this season.

White scored 29 points to lead the Lightning, while Fields registered 27 points of his own. Marshall Phillips and Teddy Dupay added 17 and 14 points, respectively.

Grand Rapids will now travel to face the Great Lakes Storm on Monday night in Birch Run. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. EST.
