Louisville Lightning News Release

The Louisville Lightning have added more offensive firepower to their roster for the 2010-2011 season. General manager David Horne confirmed the signing this week of striker Jerry Chavez, who joins the team for season two of Lightning soccer.

Former University of Louisville standout Jerry Chavez has agreed to a deal with the Louisville Lightning this week. Chavez, a native of Moreno Valley, California, brings experience from one of the top collegiate soccer programs in the United States. He joins the Lightning on a one-year deal that will see him in the Lightning shirt through the 2010-2011 season.

Chavez began his college career at Lindenwood University before transferring to the University of Louisville after his freshman year. Chavez was a starter at Lindenwood, leading the team with nine goals and earning all-conference honors. After arriving at Louisville, he made 22 appearances as a sophomore, starting 20 games. Chavez scored three goals and added seven assists as a sophomore with the Cardinals.

After suffering an injury early in his junior season, Chavez returned to make 16 appearances for coach Ken Lolla's squad in 2008. As a senior in 2009, he made 18 appearances for the Cards, starting in 16 games for the nationally-ranked Louisville Cardinals. He had two goals and three assists as a senior, firing off 28 shots during his final season with the Cardinals. Chavez scored a goal for the fifth-ranked Cards against Depaul last November which sent them on to the Big East Conference Semifinals.

The 22-year-old Chavez also serves as a U-14 Premier assistant coach at MVSC with General Manager David Horne. His experience as a player and coach make him a natural fit with the Lightning.

"Jerry is a guy we've been keeping tabs on for a while," said Lightning coach Ted Nichols. "He comes from a winning program and has played under a fantastic coach in Ken Lolla. He's got tremendous 1 v 1 attacking ability, and he's a very tough competitor," said Nichols.

Chavez is expected to make his debut with the Lightning on October 22nd in the 'Kick Cancer' pink versus yellow scrimmage. After the game, Chavez's jersey, along with those of his teammates, will be auctioned off with proceeds benefitting the Susan G. Komen Foundation. For more information on that game, check out:
