Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, MA – The Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning in conjunction with the team's American Hockey League affiliate, the Springfield Falcons, today announced the signing of defenseman Darren Rumble. As per team policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

Rumble won the Eddie Shore Award as the AHL's Outstanding Defenseman and was named a First-Team All Star following the 1996-97 campaign in which he recorded 62 points (18g, 44a) with the Philadelphia Phantoms. His 18 goals shared the AHL lead among defensemen and he ranked second in points. Rumble led the AHL in plus/minus (+45) and was named to the league's Second All-Star Team while with the P.E.I. Senators in 1994-95. He registered 53 points (7g, 46a) that season to tie for fourth in scoring among AHL defensemen.

The Barrie, Ontario native was limited to just 10 games of action last season – five with the Lightning and five with Hershey (AHL) - due to injury. The 6-1, 200-pound blue liner registered two points on a pair of goals and six penalty minutes (PIM) with the Bears. He collected two PIM and no points with the Lightning.

Rumble played 33 games with the Falcons in 2002-03, posting 22 points (5g, 17a) and 18 PIM. He also skated 19 contests with Tampa Bay that season.

"Darren Rumble has provided scoring from the blue line wherever he's been and is another player who will bring a wealth of experience and leadership to our team," said Falcons president and general manager Bruce Landon. "(Tampa Bay general manager) Jay Feaster and the Lightning organization continue to put the pieces in place for a strong club in Springfield."

Rumble posted an NHL career-high 16 points (3g, 13a) in 69 games with Ottawa in 1992-93. The following season he skated 70 games with Ottawa and posted 15 points (6g, 9a) and 116 PIM.

Rumble, 35, has tallied 393 points (77g, 316a) and 608 PIM in 694 AHL games during his 15-year professional career. He has skated in 193 NHL contests, recording 36 points (10g, 26a) and 216 PIM. Rumble was selected in the first round (20th overall) in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft by Philadelphia.
