London Lightning News Release
(London, Ontario) The London Lightning put forth a strong all-round effort, defeating the Oshawa Power 111 - 83, in its pre-season home debut at the John Labatt Centre Sun- day afternoon.
The Lightning put forth a solid defensive effort in the first half, holding the Power to 19% shooting from the floor and only 24 points on the scoreboard. On the offensive front, the Lightning held a hot hand from the field and the foul line, shooting 55% from the field and 78% from the charity stripe, while taking a 57-24 lead into the half.
The Power started the second half with a solid third quarter, but the hot hand of Taylor King of the Lightning kept them in the game. King, who played NCAA college basketball with Duke and Villanova, led the Lightning with 29 points and 7 rebounds, shooting 8-16 from beyond the arc. Starters Tim Ellis and Shawn Daniels chipped in 17 and 13 points respectively, in limited minutes because of the generous first half lead they gave the team. Oshawa got 31 points from Brandon Robinson and 15 from Tut Rauch in a losing effort.
The Lightning opened the game with a 23-3 run over the first 7 minutes of the first quarter, creating numerous Power turnovers, with tenacious defense pro- vided by guards Brandon Dean and Eddie Smith. Daniels and Ellis dictated the play in early going and allowed the bench players to get a lot of minutes in the first professional NBL basketball game played in London.
The Lightning's first regular season game is scheduled for Thursday November 3rd at the John Labatt Centre. Game time is 7:00 PM. Tickets are available from the John Labatt Centre box office and from the team's website at www.lightningbasketball.ca.
