Louisville Lightning News Release
LOUISVILLE, KY (January 13, 2012) -- The Louisville Lightning played the Ohio Vortex tonight in a game that was highly anticipated to be a big win for the Louisville Lightning. Before the game, the Vortex were sitting at the bottom of the table in the PASL Eastern Division, and the Lightning never really let the Vortex get started.
Among the top Lightning players was Frank Peabody. The third-year veteran played to his potential, as always, making a number of saves to keep the Vortex out of the game. "The guys in front of me did the majority of the work," Peabody said humbly. "Our guys were buzzing around out there...and made a lot of blocks to help me out," he added.
Simon Bird was also a big presence out on the pitch, maybe simply because he is a big body. But tonight, he ended up doing his part on the score sheet as well. He has always had the potential to put the ball in the back of the net, but tonight he converted on many of his chances, and scored two goals and two assists. When asked about his, "big body presence" and his, "veteran aura," Bird answered, "a lot of indoor soccer is being able to hold the ball and back up on defenders, and I'm not sure if I'm a veteran out there, but it's all good," he joked.
Former Houston Dynamo player, John Michael Hayden, generated a lot of offense from the midfield, adding five assists to his tally on the season. One of these assists was chosen as the assist on the goal of the match. On the goal, Hayden played the ball along the right side boards through a couple of defenders to an open space. An awaiting Tee Shipalane gave him the go-ahead, and Hayden hit him with a beautiful cross, in which Shipalane finished on a stylish volley. "What I try and do is find the guys that are moving," Hayden said. "Today, the guys were moving the ball well, so it worked out for us."
The game ended in a 15-4 victory for the Lightning which puts their record at 6-3 and 4-0 at home. The Lightning will be taking their squad on the road tomorrow, to Detroit, Michigan for a game on Sunday. They will take on the Waza, who are the team to beat in the East at 6-1. The last time the Lightning and Waza played, the Waza beat the Lightning 9-3. The Waza will be coming down to Louisville at the end of the season for the Lightning's last home game.
