Rockford, Ill. â The Grand Rapids HOOPS were able to hang with the division-leading Rockford Lightning for most of four quarters, but they ultimately fell 128-123 at the Rockford MetroCenter. Rockford was able to take five of seven quarter points as Albert White poured in a game-high 34 points.
The final quarter was nip-and-tuck as Rockford was just too strong down the stretch, holding off the hot-shooting of the HOOPS. Larry Ayuso scored 17 points (4-6 3FG)in the fourth quarter, as the HOOPS battled through a short bench to keep things close. Ayuso registered 33 points for the second consecutive game, connecting on six of a season-high 16 three-point field goal attempts.
Jerald Honeycutt continued his strong all-around play as he compiled 28 points and 20 rebounds, while Kevin Simmons contributed 14 points and 22 rebounds. Alex Scales, filling in for an injured Kei Madison, added 19 points. The HOOPS committed a season-high 30 turnovers on the night.
Grand Rapids (6-6) was able to take the first quarter, 27-26, despite a dismal 8-21 FG shooting effort. Scales led the way with eight points and four boards, while Honeycutt ran up six points and seven rebounds.
White caught fire for Rockford (9-3) in the second quarter, leading the Lightning with 18 points on their way to the quarter win and a 55-52 halftime lead. Grand Rapids continued its cold outside shooting touch, hitting on only two of 16 three-point attempts. The HOOPS frontcourt did have a strong first half, as Honeycutt had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Simmons added eight points and seven rebounds of his own.
In the third frame, the HOOPS shooting heated up, as they connected on five of nine three-pointers in taking the quarter 35-31. Heading into the final quarter, White already had 30 points for the Lightning.
