Lewis a man of character

August 30, 2005 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Ohio Aviators News Release

Cleveland, OH. The world is constantly in search of good role models. The professional basketball world is no exception. But in their midst, there is someone special. He was not only a player among players, but he is also an owner among owners. Freddie Lewis, the former ABA-NBA player and current owner of the Pittsburgh Xplosion lets his character speak for him. The Ohio Aviators, Toledo Ice and Lake Erie Rockers were honored to meet him for the first time at a Summer League ABA Exhibition Tournament in Cleveland.

Freddie Lewis played three years in the NBA with the Cincinnati Royals (his rookie season, learning from the great Oscar Robertson). Freddie Lewis also thrilled audiences for nine years with the ABA's Indiana Pacers. (Watching Freddie Lewis over the years from the nosebleed seats to courtside may very well have been the inspiration for the ABA League CEO, Joe Newman, to bring back the excitement of ABA basketball to fans around the world). Freddie Lewis is not only an excellent basketball player and respected coach, but he is also a good businessman. He knows what it takes to put a professional team on the court, but more importantly, he understands what it means to be a good role model to not only his players, but to his fellow owners and all those who have been fortunate enough to make his acquaintance in life. The Ohio Aviators dip their wings to one of the truly great legends of the ABA and NBA - the truly special - Freddie Lewis. (The ABA agrees). Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
