Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - The Arizona Sundogs announced today that veteran goaltender Levente Szuper has rejoined the club for the upcoming 2011-12 Central Hockey League season. The Budapest, Hungary native will begin his 11th professional season this year, his second with the Sundogs.
Last season, the 31-year-old Szuper (ZOO-per) appeared in 41 games for the Sundogs with a record of 18-13-6, a 3.38 GAA and .904 SV%. Those 41 games and his 2,342 minutes played in net were new franchise records. He also set new team-highs for saves made in a single season (1,240) along with this 18 wins. His .904 SV% is tops among all goaltenders in team history with at least 10 apperances.
"Szuper is a veteran goaltender that provides experience, leadership, and consistency and those are the qualities you want out of your netminder. Our team knows they can rely on him when needed. He stabilizes things in our own end. The goaltending position for us is strong when you combine the experience of Szuper and Scott Reid."
The 5-foot-11, 175-pound backstop was a fourth round draft pick of the Calgary Flames in the 2000 Entry Draft for the National Hockey League. He played three full seasons with the Flames American Hockey League affiliate (St. John Flames) that included a Calder Cup Championship his rookie year before moving on to the St. Louis Blues organization in 2003-04 where he split time between the AHL's Worchester IceCats and the ECHL's Peoria Rivermen. Szuper was 23-8-1 for Peoria with a 2.31 GAA and .915 SV% that season.
In 2004-05 Szuper headed overseas to play in Europe. For five years, he played in Italy, Sweden, Germany, and Austria before returning to the United States to join the Sundogs last year. He played two seasons of junior hockey in the OHL with the Ottawa 67's.
Szuper joins Scott Reid as the two goaltenders on the Sundogs roster, which has now increased to 14 total players. Training Camp is slated to start on October 10th.
The sixth season of Arizona Sundogs hockey is brought to you by Cliff Castle Casino-Hotel. The action begins on October 21st when the Sundogs host the Laredo Bucks at Tim's Toyota Center.
