Leveille Returns to Checkers

CHARLOTTE, NC-The Charlotte Checkers and forward Michel Leveille have agreed to terms for the 2009-10 season, general manager and head coach Derek Wilkinson announced on Friday.

Leveille, 28, returns to the Checkers after splitting time last season with Manchester of the American Hockey League and Charlotte. In 40 games with the Checkers, the skilled forward registered 15 goals and 22 assists before leading the team in playoff scoring with eight points in six games. He also tallied one goal and six assists in 20 games with Manchester.

"We are looking forward to Michel's return," Wilkinson said. "He is an elite player at our level and certainly makes all players around him better."

The 5-foot-9-inch, 190-pound native of Levis, Quebec began his professional career with the AHL's Toronto Marlies, where he notched nine goals and three assists in 41 games as a first-year pro.

Prior to his rookie campaign, Leveille enjoyed a successful four-year stint at the University of Maine where he accumulated 53 goals and 96 assists for 149 points, in 153 games. In 2006-07, his final season at Maine, Leveille was named the team's Most Valuable Player and earned First-Team All-America and First Team Hockey East All-Star honors.

The Checkers are getting ready for their 17th season of play as a member of the ECHL. In the team's 16-year history, the Checkers have made the playoffs 12 times including five consecutive playoff appearances to date.
