August 10, 2012 - South Atlantic League (SAL1)
Lexington Legends News Release
(WHITAKER BANK BALLPARK, Lexington, Ky.) Jonas Dufek pitched into the seventh inning and the Lexington Legends scored all four of their runs in the third on their way to a 4-2 win over the West Virginia Power in front of a crowd of 6,510 Friday night.
Dufek (6-2) allowed two runs and four hits over six and one-third innings of work. He struck out seven batters and walked three.
Lexington benefited from four walks in their third-inning rally. Ryan McCurdy drew a leadoff walk, but was forced at second on a grounder by Ruben Sosa. After a walk to Jordan Scott, Sosa stole third, then scored on Zach Johnson's sacrifice fly to center field. Scott advanced to second on the play. It was Johnson's South Atlantic League-leading 102nd run batted in of the season. Matt Duffy followed with a high pop-up that fell in fair territory just in front of home plate among four West Virginia players. Scott scored from second on the play and Duffy reached first. Duffy moved to second when Brandon Meredith reached on an error by Power shortstop Ashley Ponce. Mike Kvasnicka followed with a single to left, plating Duffy and moving Meredith to third. Nolan Fontana then walked to load the bases, and Justin Gominsky then drew a walk to force home Meredith, giving the Legends a 4-0 lead.
The Power scored one run in the fifth when Junior Sosa walked, stole second, and scored on a two-out single by Elias Diaz. West Virginia's final run came on a solo homer by Willy Garcia in the sixth.
Murilo Gouvea relieved Dufek with one out in the seventh. Gouvea pitched through the eighth inning, allowing one hit while striking out two batters. Dayan Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth and earned his 19th save of the season.
Power starter Porfirio Lopez (2-3) was handed the loss after allowing four runs, two of them earned, over two and two-thirds innings.
The Legends have taken two of the first three games in their four-game series with the Power. With Rome's loss to Greensboro on Friday night, the Legends move within two and one-half games of the first place Braves in the South Atlantic League Southern Division. Lexington will conclude its series with West Virginia on Saturday night. First pitch at Whitaker Bank Ballpark is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
