Schaumburg Flyers News Release

SCHAUMBRUG, IL-The Flyers closed out the 2009 home season at Alexian Field with a win, beating the Winnipeg Goldeyes 7-6 Sunday in front of 6,981 fans.

The game got off to a sloppy start in the top of the first. Two errors by Craig Maddox allowed Vince Harrison to come to the plate with two men on, and made the Flyers pay with a three-run home run, giving the Goldeyes an early 3-0 lead.

Richard Mercado got the Flyers on the board in the bottom half of the first with an RBI single to score Travis Brown, cutting the Winnipeg lead to 3-1.

The Flyers continued the scoring in back-to-back innings with solo home runs by Victor Ferrante and Lyndon Poole in the third and fourth innings respectively, evening the score at 3-3.

After an easy top of the fifth by Schaumburg starter Ryan Gehring, the Flyers bats continued to shine. Antoan Richardson got the inning started with a leadoff single, and Ferrante moved him to third with a double down the left field line. A Mercado single drove in Richardson, and Craig Maddox followed with a single of his own, giving the Flyers a 5-3 lead.

All the momentum seemed to be favoring Schaumburg, but the former Flyer, Harrison, had something to say about that, blasting a two-run home run in the sixth to tie the game 5-5.

The Flyers wasted no time getting back the lead with a big sixth inning. A base hit by Tony Mansolino got the inning started for the Flyers. After Mansolino moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Joe Pauley, Travis Brown reached on a walk. A stolen base by Mansolino, followed by Richardson getting hit by a pitch loaded the bases for Ferrante. The three-hitter delivered with a base hit to right, scoring Manolino and Brown, making it 7-5 Flyers.

Goldeyes DH Juan Diaz tried to get Winnipeg back into the game with a solo home run in the seventh, but the Flyers bullpen would limit the Goldeyes over the last three innings, with Jason Richardson collecting his fifth save as a Flyer.

Josh Giles got the win for the Flyers, moving him to 3-1 on the season. Righty Matt Davis took the loss, falling to 5-7 on the year. Ferrante went 3-5 with a home run, double, and three RBIs.

The Flyers improve to 39-50 on the season as they won this weekend's series with Winnipeg 3-1. The Goldeyes fall to 50-39. The Flyers lead the season series 9-8 and travel north of the border next weekend for a four-game series to conclude the 2009 campaign.

Joliet provided good news for Flyers fans as they beat the Kansas City T-Bones 9-7. The Flyers gained a game on KC for the fourth and final playoff spot, trailing by 2.5 games going into the final week of the season.

The Flyers are off on Monday, and will travel to Gary on Tuesday to start a crucial three-game set against the Railcats. Carmen Pignatiello (6-9, 5.98) will get the start for the Flyers in game one against TBD for Gary. You can listen to all remaining Flyers games on Flyersbaseball.com. First pitch is at 7:05.
