
Late Rally Not Enough for Bayhawks as Nationals Hold on for First Win in Franchise History

Annapolis, MD - Bayhawks midfielder Ben Rubeor scored late in the fourth quarter of the Washington Bayhawks Home Opener Friday night at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, MD, but they could not hold on as the Toronto Nationals won the opening game of the 2009 Major League Lacrosse season. Nationals' attackman Merrick Thomson was named the Bud Light MVP of the game with seven goals.
The Bayhawks jumped out to an early 4-2 lead led by veteran attackman BuggsCombs who had two of the goals. Attackman Jake Byrne and midfielder Justin Smith each tallied a goal. Toronto came back within one before Alex Smith extended the lead back to two with a quick goal off the faceoff. Smith added his second goal of the game to make the score 6-4. The Bayhawks and Nationals both scored one more each to finish out the quarter.
