Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kans. - The Wichita Wingnuts squandered a 2-0 ninth inning lead to the Gary SouthShore RailCats and had to settle for a 2-2 tie in Friday night's exhibition contest at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University.
Pitching was the dominant story on both sides for much of the game as neither team picked up a run or a hit until the sixth inning. In that frame, Brent Dean doubled to get things going for Wichita (1-0-1), eventually scoring on an RBI bounce out by Tyler Urps. The Wingnuts doubled their advantage later in the frame on an RBI single by Matt Chavez.
Gary picked up their first hit of the night in the seventh, but stranded runners in scoring position in that frame and in the eighth to keep Wichita's lead in tact.
In the ninth, the RailCats coaxed three walks from Wingnuts southpaw Andrew Taylor, two of which came around to even the score at two apiece. Wichita then went down in order in the bottom half of the ninth to end the game in a 2-2 tie.
Robert Mosebach started on the hill for the Wingnuts and allowed just a pair of baserunners in three innings while retiring the final six he faced. He was relieved by Eddie Medina who loaded the bases in the fourth, but recovered to set down the final seven he faced, giving him three scoreless frames of his own.
Jesse Pratt and Richard Ruff each pitched out of potential trouble in the seventh and eighth innings respectively to keep Wichita in front 2-0 before Gary's late rally.
The Wingnuts continue their two-game exhibition set with Gary on Saturday at Eck Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University. First pitch is slated for 5:05 p.m.
The ninth season of Wichita Wingnuts baseball begins on Thursday, May 19th at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium against the Lincoln Saltdogs.
