February 9, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
St. Charles Chill News Release

St. Charles, Mo. - Ryan Berard gave the Chill a 4-3 lead on their second short-handed goal of the night midway through the third period but the Mallards tied it and took advantage of a kneeing penalty to take a 5-4 lead with 30 seconds left and added an empty netter for a 6-4 win at The Family Arena on Sunday.

It was tightly played opening period between a pair of opponents meeting for the 11th time this season. Jeff Lee gave the Mallards (22-11-8) the early lead at the 5:29 mark, lifting a backhanded shot in traffic for his 14th goal and the 1-0 lead that would stand up at intermission. The Chill (10-31-5) outshot the Mallards 10-9 in the opening period but neither team could cash in on several good chances. That would change in the second.

Just over two minutes into the middle period the game opened up. Travis Ouellette tied the score with his second in as many nights on the sixth assist from Mike MacIntyre but the Mallards responded two minutes later when Nick Grasso skated in on a two-on-one and snapped a shot off to take back the one-goal lead.

St. Charles would battle back to take the lead midway through the second. Martin Hlinka scored his ninth goal, the first of two short-handed goals for the Chill on the night, to tie the score at 2-2 when he deflected a pass and fired a shot past Mallard goalie Ty Rimmer. Cameron Cooper gave the lead to the Chill minutes later when he blasted a shot in from the half wall for his second of the year with Jon Snowden picking up the helper. Quad City would tie the game in the final five minutes of the period and the teams would enter the locker room knotted up at 3-3.

Quad City poured on the pressure in the third, outshooting the Chill 15-3, but Martin Hlinka stole the puck behind the Mallard goal and fed Ryan Berard for the second shorty of the night and a 4-3 Chill lead midway through the final period. The shots kept coming against Chill goalie Linus Lundin who made several outstanding saves throughout the night to keep St. Charles in the game, but Quad City tied the score at 4-4 just over a minute later and then a late major penalty put the Chill in a hole as the Mallards took the lead at 5-4 on the power play and added an empty netter for the final score of 6-4.

St. Charles begins a long road trip with stops in Denver, Rapid City, and Brampton before returning home February 28th for Brett Hull Night and Mascot Madness that includes a Hull-themed jersey auction to benefit Mercy Kids.
