Evansville BlueCats News Release

EVANSVILLE, IN: The Evansville BlueCats (1-4) lost 28-26 to the visiting Sioux City Bandits (1-3) last Saturday night at Roberts Stadium. The loss is the third straight for Evansville, and marks a (1-4) start for the second year in row. The BlueCats defense was strong, coming up with 5 turnovers in the game with all 5 coming in the first half, but the BlueCats offense couldn't capitalize, scoring only 6 points off of those 5 turnovers. The BlueCats kicking game also struggled, allowing the Bandits to block 4 kick attempts which could have changed the outcome of the game.

After leading 13-10 at halftime, the BlueCats extended their lead to 26-16 after a one-yard touchdown run by Ray Kirkley with 11 minutes to go in the 4th quarter. The Bandits went on to score 2 unanswered touchdowns to take a 2-point the lead and set up a 28-yard field goal attempt by kicker Ton-Ton Luzayadio with 1:28 left in game. The go-ahead field goal attempt was blocked and the Bandits were able to run out the clock.

Quarterback Haven Mosley made the second start of his BlueCats career and first ever at Roberts Stadium. Mosley finished with 7 completions on 24 attempts with one touchdown and no interceptions. His lone touchdown pass was on a 17-yard hook up with Odest Shannon in the 3rd quarter. Mosley added 43 rushing yards and 6 attempts.

Running back Ray Kirkley rushed for 25 yards and 2 touchdowns for the BlueCats offense, giving him 6 touchdowns on the season. Kirkley ranks 3rd in the UIF in rushing with 242 yards. As a team, the BlueCats lead the league in rushing offense with 452 yards so far this season.

Deion Holts and John Winchester led the way for the BlueCats defense as they finished the game with 5 tackles each. Holts also recorded 2 tackles for a loss and his 2nd sack of the season. Winchester, last year's UIF Defensive Rookie of the Year, was making his first appearance of the season for Evansville. Defensive back Choo Choo Davis added 3.5 tackles and 2 interceptions to the defensive effort. Davis is currently tied for the league lead with 4 interceptions on the season. Tez Morris recorded 3.5 tackles and an interception of his own and defensive end LaDrelle Bryant made 3 tackles and recovered a fumble.

The BlueCats will be on the road this week as they travel to Wheeling, West Virginia, to take on the Ohio Valley Greyhounds (1-3). Ohio Valley was idle last week.
