Late field goal wide left as Gladiators lose

CLEVELAND - Matt Denny's 34-yard field goal was wide left as time expired and the Cleveland Gladiators fell 52-49 to the Chicago Rush on Saturday night in front of 8,688 at Quicken Loans Arena. The Gladiators slip to 3-5 while the Rush improves to 6-2 on the year.

Trailing 49-45 with 14 seconds left in the game, Chicago's Chris Martin returned a Denny kickoff 57 yards to put the Rush up 52-49. The Gladiators advanced to the Chicago 19 yard line before Denny came on for the tying kick attempt.

Rush quarterback Russ Michna completed 22-of-29 passes for 275 and four touchdowns in the win. Three different Rush receivers recorded catches, while Samie Parker hauled in a team-high 114 yards and two scores.

For Cleveland, John Dutton completed 28-of-39 passes for 351 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. In his first start at wide receiver, Steve Sanders caught 14 passes for a game, season and career-best 173 yards. Ben Nelson fell two yards shy of 100-yards, catching seven passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns.
