BLOOMINGTON - The Bloomington Thunder scored first but a late comeback came up short as they fell to the Columbus Cottonmouths 5-4 on Friday night at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

After a scoreless first period, the Thunder tallied as Curtis Megginson exited the penalty box and converted a feed from Kevin Walrod from the top of the left circle on the run with 17:54 left in the second period. Will Aide tied the game at 1-1 with 11:13 remaining in the middle chapter when he picked up a deflected puck and tucked it inside the left post. After the Thunder were called for too many men, the Cottonmouths gained a 2-1 advantage with a fluttering drive from the blue line by Andy Willigar past heavy traffic in front of and into the net with 6:18 left before the second intermission. The Snakes extended the lead to 3-1 just 1:22 before that break when Ian McNulty worked his way into a point-blank shot from the deep slot.

The Thunder cut the deficit to 3-2 with 7:26 remaining in regulation on a breakaway goal by Dan Barczuk on a feed from Travis Granbois. Columbus extended the advantage back to 4-2 with 3:25 remaining on a Mike Switzer blast from from the slot into the top right corner, and scored an empty net goal by Daniel Amesbury with 1:46 left. Ron Cramer found the net with just 32.8 seconds remaining followed by a Kyle Watson conversion of a bouncer from the left point with 7.7 seconds left for the final score.

Columbus was 1-for-7 on the power play while the Thunder were 0-for-5. The Thunder outshot the Cottonmouths 31-25. Max Strang took the loss in net with 20 saves while Andrew Loewen earned the win with 27 saves.

The teams rematch on Saturday night at 7:05 on Military Night featuring special jerseys worn by the Thunder and auctioned immediately after the game.
