Last Week around the Leagues

This past week Chicago Sky point guard Courtney Vandersloot set a WNBA record for most assists in a game with 18; Major League Soccer's New York Red Bulls fired head coach Chris Armas and the National Lacrosse League Fort Worth franchise named Bob Hamley as the team's Vice President of Lacrosse Operations and General Manager. Highlights from this week are from the Women's National Basketball Association, United Soccer League Championship, National Lacrosse League, Premier Lacrosse League and Major League Lacrosse.

BASKETBALL

Women's National Basketball Association

Chicago Sky guard Courtney Vandersloot recorded the single-game WNBA record and a career-high of 18 assists, with all of her teammates erupting on the bench as she did so. The previous WNBA record was held by Ticha Penichiero, who reached 16 assists in a game on two separate occasions, the first time being in 1998, just one year after the WNBA's inaugural season. Penichiero reached 16 assists just once more on August 3, 2002.

NBA G League

The NBA G League unveiled NBA G League Ignite as the name for its new team of elite prospects, which recently began training with head coach Brian Shaw in Walnut Creek, Calif. A team dedicated to developing top young players through a one-year program, NBA G League Ignite is focused on NBA Draft readiness and growth of professional life skills.

SOCCER

Major League Soccer

The New York Red Bulls have parted ways with Chris Armas, effective immediately. Assistant coach CJ Brown has also departed the club. Armas was named head coach in July of 2018 and led the Red Bulls on a 12-3-3 run to clinch the 2018 Supporters' Shield. Armas compiled a 29-21-11 record overall, with two berths in the MLS Cup Playoffs. The Red Bulls are 3-4-2 in 2020. Bradley Carnell was named the interim head coach.

National Women's Soccer League

The Houston Dash have agreed to a new multiyear contract with forward Rachel Daly for three seasons, the club announced today. The contract will see Daly remain with the Dash through the 2023 season.Daly was a key piece to Houston's success during the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup bringing intensity and outstanding leadership to the field. Of Houston's eight goals scored in the tournament, she played a role in five, opening her stellar tournament run by scoring a brace in the first game played against Utah Royals FC and capping it off with an assist in the Challenge Cup Final to secure the title.

United Soccer League Championship

USL Championship Player of the Week - Ryan James, Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC.

James earning Player of the Week honors after recording two goals to lead the Hounds to victory against Hartford Athletic.

FOOTBALL

XFL

Three XFL players made NFL 53-man rosters. Houston Roughnecks QB P.J. Walker with the Carolina Panthers. Dallas Renegades tight end Donald Parham and Los Angeles Wildcats offensive lineman Storm Norton with the Los Angeles Chargers.

National Arena League

Former National Arena League MVP Warren Smith Jr. has re-signed with the Jersey Flight. The 2021 season will be Smith's eighth season as an arena football quarterback. Smith is a New Jersey native who won a state championship during his playing days at Lacey Township High School. Smith is now a teacher at Lacey, also serving as a coach for the football team and as the freshman boys basketball coach.

LACROSSE

National Lacrosse League

Fort Worth NLL announced the hiring of Bob Hamley as the team's Vice President of Lacrosse Operations and General Manager. Having been involved with the National Lacrosse League for nearly thirty years, Hamley brings a wealth of knowledge to the expansion team and will be formally introduced at the team's launch event scheduled for November 17.

Major League Rugby

Major League Rugby (MLR) announced that the Exclusive Negotiating Agreement it executed with Kanaloa Hawai'i Rugby Ltd. has expired. MLR and Kanaloa Hawai'i have not reached any agreement by which this team may join MLR for the 2021 season.
