Western Mass Pioneers News Release

WILDER, KY (June 15) -- Despite a 2-0 lead at halftime, the Cincinnati Kings had to scramble in the last minutes of play to earn a 3-3 tie against the Western Mass Pioneers Friday night in United Soccer Leagues Second Division action.

In front of a crowd of 1,334 at Town & Country Soccer Complex, the Kings jumped on the visiting Pioneers early, scoring just eight minutes into the contest on a goal by Mike McGinlay with the assist from Kwame Sarkodie. They added a second score at the 38th minute of the first half as Thies Hermann celebrated his 29th birthday with a goal from the David Horne assist.

In the second half, though, the Pioneers charged back into the game with two quick goals in the first six minutes, the first at the 50th minute from Omar McFarlane with the assist from Everson Macial, and the second just a minute later as Macial scored unassisted. The Pioneers threatened several more times in the second half before scoring their third goal, in the 73rd minute, as Jeff Deren converted a nice give-and-go play with Easton Wilson into an open left corner of the net.

The Kings had several good chances in the second half, but couldn't convert until the five minute injury time, when Nathan Micklos was credited with what looked to be an own goal by the Pioneers. Ashleigh Townsend got the assist on the final goal.

The Kings had a whopping 19 shots on goal, 12 in the first half, to the Pioneers' 9. Kings' goalie Craig Salvati converted three saves, while Pioneers' goalie Kevin Trapp had nine saves. The Kings committed 21 fouls to the Pioneers' 10.

The Kings now stand at 2-6-3 and break a three-game division losing streak with the tie. The Pioneers are now 2-3-4 on the season.

The Kings stay home next weekend for a Saturday night, June 23 contest against Crystal Palace Baltimore, a new team in the USL Second Division. The Kings defeated Crystal Palace in Baltimore, 1-0, last month.
