Las Vegas Locomotives News Release

The Las Vegas Locomotives took to the practice field again Tuesday, Sept. 6 at 8 a.m. in full pads. The offense and defense installed new plays and schemes in their individual units and continued to challenge one another throughout the two-and-a-half hour practice.

During group play, the defense prevailed against the offense by making several big hits and maintaining quality coverage in the secondary. Cornerbacks Patrick Stoudamire, Gerard Lawson and Brandon Sumrall each knocked away passes from receivers, and safety Lewis Baker and cornerback Jameel Dowling both had interceptions. In addition, defensive lineman Marcus Smith had a huge hit on running back Marcel Shipp during a full squad run drill. Safety Jamal Lewis also had a fumble recovery during a full speed goal line drill at the conclusion of practice.

There were some bright spots for the Locos offense, as well. Newcomer running back P.J. Hill continued to learn the Locos' offensive system and had several nice runs. Veteran wide receiver and vocal leader Andrae Thurman also had a few nice catches, including one over the middle despite tight coverage from the Locos' secondary.

"Today wasn't our best practice," commented head coach Jim Fassel after coming down on the team at the end of the day. "Sometimes you need days like today to refocus though. We are a good team, better than we have been our first two years, we just need to make up our minds and play like one."

Locos side notes: The YES Network was on hand following practice to interview Coach Fassel about his memories from Sept. 11, 2001. Fassel was head coach of the New York Giants during the tragic events that day.
