Las Vegas Locomotives Training Camp Notes - Tuesday, August 30
August 30, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1)
Las Vegas Locomotives News Release
Teaching was the word of the day during the Las Vegas Locomotives' fifth day of training camp. Coaches at all position levels worked hard to implement the various schemes the offense and defense will employ during the regular season.
One player who had a great deal of catching up to do was newly signed quarterback Brian Brohm, who joined the team for his first day of practice today. Brohm will look to learn quickly and compete for playing time in the Locos deep quarterback roster. During his first practice, Brohm looked sharp in individual drills and showed great arm strength.
"The master plan was to bring in four quarterbacks originally, and we've done that before," said Head Coach Jim Fassel. "With Brian, a quarterback became available that we liked, so we are going to bring him in and take a look."
Heat continued to be a factor with temperatures in the upper 90's throughout practice, but the players have quickly adapted and seem to be used to the desert weather by now.
"Hey, that's camp. Everyone in the league is dealing with it [the heat] right now," said running back Hakim Hill.
The offensive line and running back corps had a highly competitive and vocal group run drill against the defensive front seven early in practice that was highly entertaining to watch. Big hits were made on both sides of the ball with players showing mid-season form and intensity. Hill continued to show great speed through the line of scrimmage on runs throughout the drill and practice.
The defense was playing particularly possessed during today's practice. Defensive linemen Lauvale Sape and Ryan Boschetti both showed a great arsenal of moves while engaging blockers at the line of scrimmage. Boschetti was all over the field and could be a terror in opposing team's backfields throughout the season.
The secondary continued to impress with cornerbacks Marquis Floyd and Gerard Lawson knocking everything that came their way out of the air. While the quarterbacks and receivers have looked great throughout camp, the defensive secondary definitely answered the call during group and team drills today.
One standout play from today's practice was an amazing touchdown grab in the back left corner of the end zone by young wide receiver Saalim Hakim. Hakim elevated on a fade route, secured the catch and managed to keep both feet in bounds under tight coverage.
Veteran receiver Andrae Thurman continued to show why he is one of the team's leaders as he continually coached and encouraged younger players throughout practice. One player who may be benefitting from Thurman's guidance and the teaching of wide receivers coach Tim Rattay is Cameron Colvin, who ran sharp routes and showed soft hands throughout practice.
The Locos return to the practice field tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2011 at 8 a.m.
Locos side notes: Linebacker Beau Bell, a former University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) standout and 2007 Mountain West Conference Defensive MVP, was asked for his thoughts on UNLV's opening game at Wisconsin this Thursday night. Bell's brother B.J. Bell is currently a defensive lineman with the UNLV team.
"I like what Coach Hauck is doing," said Bell. "My brother loves Coach Hauck. He [Hauck] holds the players to a higher standard. I have faith in my Rebels and think they will put up a good fight against the Badgers."
