Las Vegas Locomotives Training Camp Notes - Sunday, August 28
August 28, 2011 - United Football League (UFL 1)
Las Vegas Locomotives News Release
The excessive heat in Las Vegas continued to play a factor at practice as the Las Vegas Locomotives took the field for their third day of training camp. While temperatures stayed in the mid-90's with considerable humidity for most of practice, Coach Jim Fassel showed an increase in intensity on the second day in full pads.
"The number one thing is to bring this team together as a cohesive group," said Fassel. "This is gonna be a battle in the UFL this year and we are a marked team."
The increase in intensity was apparent from the start of practice as Fassel hounded his offensive line to get in and out of huddle and run to the line of scrimmage during a group run session against the defensive front seven.
"I always believe in tempo," said Fassel. "If you let them lollygag here or there, then they won't be ready in the games. I force my guys to think quickly in practice and want them to get the mistakes out of the way here. The practice tempo will force them into mistakes, but the games will then seem slow to them."
The offensive and defensive lines were matched up against one another throughout practice now that the team is in full pads. Offensive guard Tim Duckworth and defensive lineman Lawrence Wilson had a few nice battles during one-on-one blocking drills with both players displaying solid fundamentals. Defensive lineman Alfred Malone also showed an impressive set of pass rushing skills during drills throughout the day.
The Locos quarterbacks and receivers once again looked impressive throughout the day and should pose a great threat to opposing defenses throughout the season. Newcomer and wide receiver Eddie Drummond made several quality grabs during team passing drills, and starting quarterback Chase Clement made a beautiful touchdown pass to Andrae Thurman while rolling out of the pocket in an 11-on-11 passing scrimmage. Locos fans should expect to see that connection on a regular basis once the season starts.
On the defensive side of the ball, defensive back Jamal Lewis had a solid day of practice with several quick breaks on the football and a few interceptions.
"I'm happy with how the team is developing," said Fassel. "We have a lot of guys who are going to be leaders and help this team. My goal is clear. I want that championship."
The Locos return to the practice field tomorrow, Monday, Aug. 29, 2011 at 8 a.m.
Locos side notes: At the conclusion of practice, the Locos sang happy birthday to offensive lineman Keith Gray, who is celebrating his 25th birthday today.
