Las Vegas Locomotives Training Camp Notes - Monday, August 29

Las Vegas Locomotives News Release

The Las Vegas Locomotives took to the practice field for their fourth day of training camp Monday, Aug. 29, at 8 a.m. and practiced for nearly three hours despite another day of brutal Vegas heat. Temperatures were in the high 90's throughout practice.

Head Coach Jim Fassel continues to be pleased with the progress his team has shown on all levels early in camp.

"I'm really happy with the work and effort I'm seeing from everyone on the field," said Fassel immediately after practice. "They're coming out here ready to work hard, which is what I want."

Fassel also shared he is monitoring the progress of the offensive line and wide receiving units particularly closely because many of these players are new to the Locos.

"These two groups are particularly intriguing right now because they have a lot of newcomers," said Fassel. "They are all good players, but we need to really evaluate and monitor their progress moving forward."

Two players in this group, first-year wide receivers, Eric Peterman and Cameron Colvin, made several impressive plays during seven-on-seven drills. Peterman caught several balls and gained significant yardage running a reverse while Colvin connected with backup quarterback Zac Lee on a beautiful deep ball down the sidelines.

Veteran Locos receiver Andrae Thurman continued to be one of the most vocal leaders on offense, encouraging teammates throughout practice.

"I think we got the W today white," Thurman yelled after an 11-on-11 scrimmage pitted the offensive unit, in white jerseys, against the defense, in red. Thurman caught several passes from Chase Clement throughout the day.

The offensive unit also saw the integration of recent acquisition, running back P.J. Hill.

"It feels good to be out here, learning and playing with some good guys. I think I did my best today, but I still have a lot of studying to do," said Hill after practice.

Hill joined the Locos two days ago after being released by the New Orleans Saints and has been trying to catch up after missing initial meetings and practices.

"It's kind of like being thrown into a calculus class when you've never taken basic math before," commented Fassel about Hill joining the Locos midway through camp. "It's hard to miss the first few days, but he's [Hill] working hard and seems to be catching on."

On defense, cornerbacks Marquis Floyd, Patrick Stoudamire and Gerard Lawson, a Las Vegas native, stood out throughout the practice. All three players had interceptions during drills against the offensive unit. Veteran Locos cornerback Wale Dada and defensive lineman Eric Henderson also had strong practices and were particularly vocal throughout the day.

Eddie Drummond and Saalim Hakim showcased their great speed on special teams during kick return practice. Drummond is a former Pro Bowl kick returner from his time with the Detroit Lions.

The Locos return to the practice field tomorrow, Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2011 at 8 a.m. They will also host a scrimmage this Friday, Sept. 2 at 8 p.m. at Sam Boyd Stadium.
