Omaha Lancers News Release
The Lancers are enjoying the first month of the New Year. River City is 5-0-0 in January after Tuesday's 5-1 win at Tri-City.
"It's a nice way to start 2004," said coach Mike Hastings, "but we know there is still a lot of hockey left to be played."
Included in the streak are two overtime shootout wins, four road wins and a combined three victories over the division leaders Cedar Rapids and Tri-City. Here are some more numbers for you to think about; goalie Jeff Lerg is 3-0-0 in January and has improved his overall record to 10-1-0. Marty Magers has won twice with both victories coming over Tri-City. 17 different Lancers have scored at least one point including the leaders Paul Stastny (5g/2a) and Mick Lawrence (3g/4a).
All the success has allowed the Lancers to move within one point of first place in the USHL West.
Lancers Offer a Two for One
Fans who purchase tickets to the Lancers game with Sioux Falls on Saturday January 17 may be treated to a full plate of hockey. That's when the Lancer host the second annual O.M.A.H.A. High School All Star Game and Skills Competition.
"The high school league just continues to grow and we believe this event brings attention to it," said Lancers GM of Off Ice Operations Rich Roberts. "The group, headed by Mark Hasebroock and John Thomas, is very well run and organized. They do a wonderful job of making the day a special one for the players."
Doors open at 1:00 pm. The skills competition begins at 1:30pm with the game set to face off around 2:30pm. Fans must purchase a ticket to the Lancer game that night for admission to the all-star event.
Lancer Fans Going to School
School will be in session Saturday night when the Lancers host Sioux Falls and present the "Rules of the Game".
The focal point of the activity will be the game night referee who will wear a wireless microphone. When penalties are awarded he will address the crowd with his call. Fans will be able to hear the call and see it on the Lancer Vision screen as well.
During the first intermission the on-ice officials will stick around and explain some of the basic calls such as icing, offsides and a two-line pass.
