LAFC Advances to Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Final for Second Time in Club History
May 3, 2023 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
NEW YORK - The Los Angeles Football Club, behind a strong home crowd at BMO Stadium, advanced to the Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League Final for the second time in club history with a 4-1 victory on aggregate over the Philadelphia Union in the CCL Semifinals, including a 3-0 victory on Tuesday night. LAFC took an early 1-0 lead on Timothy Tillman's 13th minute goal, before pulling ahead with late-match goals from Kwadwo Opoku in the 82nd minute and Dénis Bouanga in the 90th minute, the latter's sixth goal in CCL competition.
LAFC (2020, 2023) joins the LA Galaxy (1997, 2001) as just the second MLS team to make multiple CCL Final appearances. The win sets up the opportunity for LAFC to secure their third trophy in the last five months after previously capturing the 2022 MLS Supporters' Shield and 2022 MLS Cup.
LAFC awaits the winner of Wednesday's match featuring Tigres UANL and Club León, both representatives of Liga MX. The two clubs are scheduled to play their second leg of the CCL Semifinals at Estadio León at 10 p.m. ET. Tigres hold a 2-1 aggregate advantage after hosting the first leg last week and have never lost a semifinal series in CCL play. LAFC fell 2-1 to Tigres in their last CCL Final appearance (2020). This year's Concacaf Champions League winner will face top clubs from around the world, including victors from each of the world's five other confederations, in the FIFA Club World Cup in December.
In 2022, the Seattle Sounders made history by becoming the first MLS team to capture a Concacaf Champions League trophy with a 5-2 aggregate victory against Pumas UNAM, including a 3-0 shutout in Leg 2 at Seattle's Lumen Field.
