Yuma Scorpions News Release
(Yuma, AZ) - The Yuma Scorpions have announced that three Lady Scorpions will divide $2000 in scholarships for their future education as part of the State Farm Insurance Lady Scorpions' Dance Team Scholarship Program. Cibola High and Arizona Western College graduate Danielle Lee and Yuma High grad Liz Rodriguez will each be awarded $500 scholarships, and the grand prize scholarship of $1000 has been awarded to Cibola High grad Crystal Fay. The awards were officially announced to a record GBL crowd of 6,116 in-between innings Saturday night as the Scorpions hosted the Mesa Miners. The winners were determined by an arduous interview process, in which the 5 Lady Scorpions who actually applied for the scholarships were interviewed about their future plans and scholarship intent twice; first by the Scorpions' front office trio of Asst. GM of Sales and Marketing Jason Matlock, Director of Ticket Sales Chris Carlson and Lady Scorpions' Dance Team Coordinator Lisa Aho, then by representatives of the 5 Yuma area State Farm agents that sponsor the Dance Team itself. Fay and Rodriguez will use the scholarship funds as they begin their freshman years at AWC, and Lee will use them as she continues her four-year college education at Northern Arizona University-Yuma.
The awards culminate a hugely successful season for the 8-member Dance Team, who went from tryouts in March to brief appearances in April to hard-charging practices in April and May to a grueling 50-game Scorpions' home schedule of performances over the summer. In that time, the Lady Scorpions wowed the audiences with their dance steps, and gave Scorpions' fans an added component to the games that no other GBL team had. "We've been so pleased with the way this has turned out this season," said State Farm agent Martin Armijo-speaking on behalf of the other Yuma area State Farm Insurance agents-to the Saturday night crowd. "This has become a great part of the Scorpions' experience, and these ladies have worked so hard all season long. To give them something back like this is something we're very proud to be part of." The scholarship money came from funds raised all throughout the season from one of the most popular on-field promotions-the Country Club Motors Squishy Ball Toss-which gave fans a chance to win a car by throwing foam balls (at $1 apiece) into the back of a Country Club Motors truck once during each home game. "The Scorpions greatly appreciate the cooperation of founding partner Country Club Motors as well as State Farm Insurance for making the scholarships possible," said Scorpions' General Manager Pat Brown. "But more importantly, we want to take this opportunity to congratulate Crystal, Danielle and Liz for these deserving honors, and thank every single one of the Lady Scorpions and Junior Scorpions for their tireless work this year. They're all winners in our book." More scholarships will be awarded next year. During the off-season, the State Farm Insurance Lady Scorpions' Dance Team will be available for community appearances that will not only keep Scorpions' Fever on the rise, but also help contribute to next year's scholarship money. Those that are interested in hosting the Lady Scorpions' Dance Team for their next event are encouraged to call the Scorpions' offices at (928) 257-4700.
