LA Galaxy's Landon Donovan Voted MLS Player of the Week

NEW YORK (Monday, June 25, 2012) LA Galaxy star Landon Donovan was voted Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for his performance in Week 16 of the 2012 MLS season. Donovan registered three goals and two assists in two games, including the game-winning-goal against Real Salt Lake on June 20, to earn the honor.
Donovan notched his first goal of the week in the 29th minute of Wednesday's game against RSL. With his team down 2-0, Donovan intercepted a pass intended for RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando and buried a shot to cut the lead in half. In the 50th minute, Donovan set up the Galaxy's second goal sending a through ball to teammate Mike Magee. Magee calmly controlled the ball and placed it in the back of the net to level the score. Just 18 minutes later, in the 68th minute, Donovan scored the game-winner after receiving a long ball from Magee. With one deft touch, Donovan maneuvered around Rimando, who was racing off his line to cut down the angle, and placed the ball in the goal for the Galaxy's third of the game.
Donovan and the Galaxy continued their hot streak just three days later back at The Home Depot Center against Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The California native contributed to the Galaxy's second goal of the game, slipping a ball to Robbie Keane inside the box in the 30th minute. Keane danced through the defense and placed a shot past goalkeeper Joe Cannon to double the Galaxy's lead. With that 2-0 lead still holding in the 41st minute, Donovan completed his production for the week by finishing on a penalty kick, bringing the final score to 3-0 against the Whitecaps FC.
Donovan and the Galaxy look to extend their three-game winning streak this weekend when they face in-state rivals, the San Jose Earthquakes, on Saturday, live on ESPN2 at 10 p.m. ET.
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
