KOREA VS. FRANCE - JUNE 18 AT STAPLES CENTER: AEG, the Los Angeles Galaxy and the 2006 Korean World Cup Cheering committee have announced a special World Cup partnership. AEG, the Galaxy and the 2006 Korean World Cup Cheering committee will host a viewing party at STAPLES Center on Sunday, June 18th, 2006 at 12:00 p.m. when Korea will take on France in their second game of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany. Tickets are now available at the STAPLES Center Box Office in downtown Los Angeles and The Home Depot Center Box Office in Carson. Fans will be allowed to receive a maximum of four (4) tickets per person. During the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the Galaxy, AEG and the Los Angeles Korean American community teamed up to host a viewing party of Korea's bronze medal match on June 29, 2002. More than 18,000 fans attended the 3:00 AM event to watch the game.
GALAXY BATTLE BACK TO EARN 1-1 DRAW WITH UNITED: While the Los Angeles Galaxy weren't able to claim their first victory since April 29, they were still able to put an end to their seven-game losing slide against the top team in MLS, a late Cobi Jones equalizer giving them a 1-1 draw with D.C. United on Sunday at The Home Depot Center. United's Christian Gomez gave the visitors a first-half lead with a stunning goal, but Jones scored in the 88th minute to pull the Galaxy level in Frank Yallop's second game in charge.
GALAXY SNAP LOSING STREAK: The Galaxy snapped its seven-game losing streak, ending a new club record for most losses in a row. The Galaxy's 1-1 draw to D.C. United on June 11 ended the streak, as second half substitute Cobi Jones scored the tying goal for his second goal of the season with the assist from Paulo Nagamura, his second assist on the year.
USA FALLS TO CZECH REPUBLIC, 3-0, IN 2006 WORLD CUP: The U.S. fell 3-0 to the Czech Republic in the opening match of the 2006 FIFA World Cup on June 12 at FIFA World Cup Stadium in Gelsekirchen, Germany. Los Angeles Galaxy forward Landon Donovan started and played the full 90 minutes versus the Czech Republic, but was unable to spark the U.S. offense. The Czech Republic struck early when 6-foot, 7-inch forward Jan Koller scored on a fifth-minute header. Tomas Rosicky added a 35-yard rocket before the end of the half and later added a second on a breakaway late in the game. With the win, the Czech Republic sits atop Group E with three points. Italy topped Ghana 2-0 in the second match of Group E and is second place. The U.S. faces Italy next on Saturday, June 17 at 3 p.m. ET live on ABC, Univision and ussoccer.com's MatchTracker.
TRINIDAD & TOBAGO STUN SWEDEN IN SCORELESS TIE IN WORLD CUP: An amazing match in Dortmund saw FIFA World Cup(tm) debutants Trinidad and Tobago hold Sweden to a goalless draw on Saturday, 10 June 2006. Los Angeles Galaxy forward Cornell Glen came on and played 39 minutes as a second half substitute and nearly stole the match when his lone strike on goal beat the goalkeeper only to hit the cross bar. An injury to the Soca Warriors' first-choice goalkeeper Kelvin Jack shortly before kick-off gave West Ham United's Shaka Hislop a chance to shine on the world's biggest stage. Hislop did that - and more - as the 37-year-old pulled off a string of superb saves to deny Ibrahimovic, Larsson and Co. The final scoreline was made all the more incredible as Trinidad and Tobago, ranked 47th in the world, compared to Sweden's 16, had Avery John sent off in the 46th minute for two bookable offences.
GALAXY SUFFER FIRST LOSS IN THE HONDA SUPERCLASICO: For the first time ever in the Honda SúperClásico, the L.A. Galaxy failed to get the better of Chivas USA. The previous six meetings had all gone to the Galaxy, but two first-half goals from Ante Razov on June 8 at The Home Depot Center gave Chivas a 2-1 victory. Herculez Gomez scored the consolation goal for the Galaxy. The Galaxy, normally known as the Green-and-Gold, came out to begin the game wearing blue and yellow, the colors of CD Guadalajara's hated rival, Club America. If seeing red raises the ire of a bull, the yellow and blue worn by the Galaxy definitely sparked Chivas USA to put in a strong performance. The Galaxy goal came in the 27th minute. From a free kick some 25 yards out from goal, the three Galaxy players seemed unsure about what they were doing, starting with some disjointed touches. But forward Herculez Gomez took control of the ball, dribbled across the goal and fired from distance, sneaking his shot just inside Chivas 'keeper Preston Burpo's left-hand post.
