May 11, 2003 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Los Angeles Avengers News Release
LOS ANGELES -- With one regular-season game remaining, the Los Angeles Avengers have clinched a first-round bye in the upcoming 2003 Arena Football League Playoffs due to their 45-34 victory over the Colorado Crush on Saturday night at STAPLES Center and the San Jose SaberCats' 47-34 win over the Tampa Bay Storm today.
The Avengers (11-4) will close out the regular season on the road against the defending ArenaBowl champion SaberCats (11-4) on Saturday, May 17, at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (Pacific) and the game will be televised live on Fox Sports Net 2.
Currently the AFL's No. 1 playoff seed, the Avengers will maintain that position if they are able to defeat the SaberCats, who can overtake L.A. with a victory of their own. The league's top seed has home field advantage throughout the playoffs, up to and including ArenaBowl XVII on Sunday, June 22.
Regardless of their final seeding, the Avengers will host a quarterfinal playoff game on Sunday, June 1, at STAPLES Center. Kickoff is set for noon (Pacific) and the game will be televised on KNBC Channel 4. Tickets are on sale now at all Ticketmaster outlets and the STAPLES Center box office.
The top four seeds earn a week off and advance directly to the quarterfinals (May 31-June 1), while the next eight seeds face off in first-round games (May 24-25).
