Komets Ring In 2010 With 5-Point Week

Fort Wayne, IN - The Komets completed week 12 of 2009-10 earning five points in four games and improving to 17-11-0-2 for 36 points and third place with a four-point margin over fourth place Bloomington and Dayton.

The final week of 2009 began with a 6-4 setback to the visiting Dayton Gems Tuesday night in the first of a mid-week holiday home-and-home series. Wednesday the Komets turned the tables and clipped the Gems in Dayton 3-2.

Thursday the Komets celebrated New Year's Eve with a 5-1 thrashing of the Thunder from Bloomington. A sold-out crowd of 10,454 attended the traditional Fort Wayne event pushing the Komets' average home attendance for the year to 8,036 after 13 games on coliseum ice. It was the Komets' eighth straight New Year's Eve victory to improve to 36-13-3-1 in 53 games.

Saturday the Komets capped the week earning a point in a 3-2 shootout loss at Flint.

Thunder and Lumberjacks visit for double-header weekend The Komets will skate back-to-back home games this Friday and Saturday. Friday the Bloomington PrairieThunder (14-11-2-2, 32 points) return for an 8pm faceoff. The Thunder are on the Komets' heels in the standings trailing by four points. Bloomington will host Port Huron Wednesday before traveling to Fort Wayne Friday. The Thunder are winless in their last four outings (0-3-1-0). Friday's match will be Bloomington's third of six visits to Fort Wayne where they are winless in two previous visits. The Komets lead the series 3-2-0-0.

Saturday the Komets welcome Muskegon (21-8-0-3) at 7:30pm. The Lumberjacks are tied with Port Huron at the top of the IHL with 45 points. The Komets dropped the Lumberjacks 7-2 in the last meeting Dec. 26 at Muskegon. The Lumberjacks are 2-3-0-0 in their last five games and will host Flint Friday before facing the Komets Saturday.

Sunday the Komets complete the weekend with a 5pm faceoff in Dayton. The Gems are also trying to catch the Komets, trailing by four points, and will skate at Flint Saturday before facing the Komets at Hara Arena Sunday.

Komet streaks.....Leo Thomas (C) has points in four straight games (2 goals, 3 assists) and assists in three straight games (3 assists).....Konstantin Shafranov (LW) has a three-game point scoring streak (1goal, 3 assists).

Sims claims number 300.....Al Sims, Fort Wayne's winningest coach, had more to celebrate than the new year last Thursday night when he registered his 300th win as a Komet head coach after beating Bloomington in Fort Wayne's traditional New Year's Eve game 5-1. Sims is in his seventh season as a Komet head coach. Sims coached four seasons from 1989-90 thru 1992-93 and is in his third straight season as head coach since his return in 2007.
