Knoxville Ice Bears move back into SEHL playoff contention

The Knoxville Ice Bears got back into the thick of the SEHL playoff battle this past week, splitting a four game series with the first place Huntsville Channel Cats. The Ice Bears two victories came in dramatic style, a 3-2 overtime winner on Friday (13th) in Huntsville and a 5-4 shootout victory on Saturday (14th) in Knoxville.

Both Cape Fear and Knoxville saw large holiday crowds on Saturday (14th). Cape Fear drew 5121 to the Crown Coliseum in Fayetteville while Knoxville’s Civic Center packed 3140 to see the Ice Bears defeat Huntsville in a shootout.

While Huntsville is well ahead in first place with 64 points, the battle for the remaining two playoff positions remains very close. Cape Fear is in second place with 36 points, Knoxville is next with 34 points, and Winston-Salem has 32 points. Knoxville begins the action on Thursday night in Winston-Salem before heading home for games against Cape Fear & Winston-Salem on Friday & Saturday. Winston-Salem has home games on Thursday (vs. Knoxville) and Friday (vs. Huntsville) before heading to Knoxville. Cape Fear must play three on the road, Friday in Knoxville, and Saturday & Sunday in Huntsville.

SEHL Player of the Week

K. J. Voorhees of the Knoxville Ice Bears is the South East Hockey League Player of the Week. The Lake Stevens, Washington native scored five goals and added three assists for eight points. Voorhees now has tallied a career high 36 goals for Knoxville. He’s third in the SEHL in scoring with 36 goals-31 assists-67 points. His 36 goals put him second in the league while his 31 assists rank him third in the SEHL.

SEHL Goaltender of the Week

The Knoxville Ice Bears Adam Barbour is the South East Hockey League Goaltender of the Week. The rookie net minder won one game and lost another in overtime for the Ice Bears last week, stopping 71 of the 76 shots that he faced. Barbour played three years at the University of Delaware and the Fairfax, Virginia native started the year in Winston-Salem before joining Knoxville. In two games with the Ice Bears, he’s posted a 2.48 goals against average and a 93.4% save percentage.

Other SEHL Top Performers

Huntsville’s James Patterson scored four goals and added two assists for six points last week. Patterson has scored 32 goals this season.

Huntsville’s Allan Carr scored six goals and added three assists for nine points. Carr has scored 42 goals for the Channel Cats.

Knoxville’s Craig Desjarlais tallied four goals and added three assists last week.

Defenseman Scott Young of the Cape Fear Fire Antz had a four point week (3 goals-1 assist).

Jason Sangiuliano of the Winston-Salem T-Birds tallied three goals in two games.

Sunday, February 22nd: The Huntsville Channel Cats present “Skate with the ‘Cats” following the game that begins at 4:05PM.

Huntsville Game Date Change:

Please note that the Huntsville Channel Cats are moving their game originally scheduled for Thursday, March 18 back one day to Wednesday, March 17th. It will be a special St. Patrick’s Day promotion with the Channel Cats wearing special St. Patrick’s Day jerseys and the first 2000 fans will receive a set of Channel Cats trading cards.
