Corvallis Knights News Release
SILVERDALE, Wash. - Left-hander Hazahel Quijada pitched five shutout innings and got the win as the Knights topped Kitsap 8-3 on Friday in Game 1 of their West Coast League series.
A sophomore-to-be at UC Riverside, Quijada allowed five hits, struck out four and improved to 3-0. His five scoreless innings stretched his shutout streak to 16 straight innings over his last four starts and lowered his ERA from 0.71 to 0.59.
Chris Burkholder (Dartmouth) then allowed no earned runs over three innings and Cody Hoff (Linn-Benton) pitched the ninth. Burkholder struck out five; he has a 1.29 ERA over 14 innings in his last four appearances.
Roman Garcia (San Diego) had three hits and two RBIs and Oregon State teammates Kyle Nobach and Andy Atwood had two hits and two RBIs each to lead the Knights, who had 10 hits.
They led 5-0 after Nobach's two-run single in the sixth and then broke the game open by scoring three times in the eighth inning. Two runs scored on Atwood's two-out single and the third crossed on Garcia's two-out base hit.
The Knights (34-19 overall, 27-19 WCL, 9-10 second half) extended their winning streak to three games in row, their longest such stretch of success in the second half. They also clinched the season series by winning their fourth game in four tries against the BlueJackets this summer.
The series resumes at 6:35 p.m. Saturday; Western Oregon lefty Jacob Fricke (3-0, 2.72) is the projected starter for Corvallis. Central Arizona lefty Ryley Widell (3-1, 2.62) goes in Sunday's 5 p.m. series finale.
