Macon Knights News Release
MACON, Ga. â The Macon Knights announced today that the team has re-signed general manager and head coach Kevin Porter to a one-year extension.
"We're very excited to have Kevin for another year," said Knights operator Beverly Olson. "Kevin's success has made the Knights a premier team in the af2, and we're looking for continued success in 2003. Kevin is a great family man and well thought of in the Middle Georgia area."
Porter, who is from Warner Robins, Ga., will enter his third season as head coach of the Knights.
"I have been blessed to have the opportunity to coach here in Middle Georgia where I grew up and look forward to another challenging and productive season," said Porter. "Mr. and Mrs. Olson have given me everything I need to be successful and success starts at the top."
Last season Porter led the Knights to a 13-3 regular season record and an American Conference Eastern Division Championship. The Knights also hosted, and won, their first playoff game. The Knights ranked in the top five of several af2 statistical categories. The Knights were ranked second in scoring offense, pass rating and first downs. The team also finished the season ranked fourth in total offense, rushing defense and sacks against.
Porter says he knows he'll have to replace some players from last year's team, but he is confident there will be another championship-caliber team in Macon next season.
"We could easily lose eight to ten guys to the AFL from last year's roster. But, we also have some great players returning and I am confident that those guys will step in and do a great job for us," said Porter.
In the Knights inaugural season, Porter led the team to a regular season record of 10-6 and the Knights were the only expansion team to make the playoffs. Porter's team was named the 2001 Expansion Team of the Year. As a head coach, Porter is 24-11 with the Knights and 32-20 in the af2 (8-9 with Pensacola in 2000).
