Knighthawks Look Ahead to Buffalo After Loss

April 22, 2018 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release

The Rochester Knighthawks dropped their regular season home finale, 11-6, Saturday night against the New England Black Wolves. Rochester (9-8) enters the final weekend of the season tied with New England (9-8) for second place in the East Division.

"We know what we've got to do," said Knighthawks forward Joe Resetarits. "Next week we've just got to come out and play our best. We have to forget this one, get it out of us and worry about Buffalo next week."

Rochester travels to play the rival Buffalo Bandits on Saturday, April 28 at 7:30 p.m. at KeyBank Center. Buffalo, who lost 16-11 to Toronto tonight, is tied for fourth in the East Division.

On Saturday, Rochester was led offensively by Austin Shanks' two goals. Resetarits and Kyle Jackson each put up a goal and one assist. Scott Campbell scored in transition, while Eric Fannell added a third-quarter tally. Jake Withers continued his record-breaking season by going 16-for-21 on faceoffs.

With a two-point effort, Resetarits tied Tom Schreiber's record for points in a season by a U.S.-born player (94). After the game, the Hamburg, NY native offered his thoughts on the game and the record.

"Getting the win was the first thing on our mind," Resetarits said. "But to get that I owe everything to my teammates and coaches. I wouldn't be doing this if it wasn't for them."

Rochester came out strong, taking an early 2-0 lead less than five minutes into the first. Matt Vinc held the Black Wolves scoreless for 14:52 before Kyle Buchanan's power-play goal got them on the board.

New England would tie the game at two, but Kyle Jackson would score the go-ahead goal at 6:36 of the second. The Black Wolves pulled ahead 4-3 only to have Rochester tie the contest at four with a power-play, quick-stick goal from Shanks at 1:53 of the third.

The Black Wolves would answer by stringing together three straight goals and scoring seven of the contest's final nine goals. Rochester fought back with goals by Fannell and Resetarits before two empty-net goals secured the New England win.

"Every game, every shift, every loose ball, every movement a guy makes, it matters," said Knighthawks head coach Mike Hasen. "They were big, they were strong, and disrupted what we wanted to do."

With a New England win and Toronto win over Buffalo, all five teams in the East Division are still in playoff contention. The Knighthawks, however, know that they are in control of their own fate, and they are ready to focus on getting that win next week.

"We need to get back to the process," Hasen said. "Everybody has to move the ball. Everybody's got to move their feet. We know what we have to do. The season is 18 lessons and tonight was lesson 17. That's the way we look at it and the way we move forward to Buffalo."
