The Rochester Knighthawks announced today that they have traded Dan Dawson to the Saskatchewan Rush for a second rounder (Vancouver's pick) in the 2018 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft and the Rush's third-round choice in 2020.
"He did everything we asked and more," said Knighthawks Owner and General Manager Curt Styres. "We won two championships with Dan and we are very grateful (to him). He is a class act and a team-first guy. He leads by example and shows the rookies the right way to conduct themselves. He is a Hall of Famer and the league's Ironman."
"After thinking long and hard about it, we can't have our cake and eat it too," added Styres. "With Dan ready to play and being a scratch - for all he's done for lacrosse - he deserves to play. With us playing lights out the last three games, it would be tough to make any changes to the lineup."
Dawson departs the Knighthawks after playing parts of six seasons in Rochester. The alternate captain posted 132 goals and 294 assists for 426 points in 93 regular season games. He leaves the organization ranked fourth all-time in team history in assists and points.
Acquired from the Philadelphia Wings on Dec. 14, 2012 in a six-player, two draft pick deal, Dawson was a key member of the Knighthawks' 2013 and 2014 championship teams. He was named the 2014 Championship Game MVP after scoring three goals and chipping in five assists in two games during the championship series. In the regular season, he broke Cody Jamieson's single-season team record with 72 assists.
The Oakville, Ontario native, who is in the midst of his 17th season in the NLL, stands fourth all-time in league history in assists (819) and games played (264), and fifth in goals (478) and points (1,297). He is second in NLL playoff assists (92) and points (146), and is tied for sixth in goals (52). Dawson is a six-time NLL All-Star and a seven-time NLL All-Pro selection. The forward is also the league's Ironman, having played in 234 straight games from March 9, 2002 to Dec. 29, 2016. In 2009, he was named the NLL MVP as a member of the Boston Blazers.
