Rochester Knighthawks News Release
(Rochester, November 8)... *Rochester Knighthawks Tyler Burton and Jarrett Davis will bring some extra "baggage" across the border when they drive to Rochester for Training Camp. The two second-year pros will lug their overgrown mustaches with them as a symbol of their commitment to fight prostate cancer.
The two Knighthawks are in the beginning stages of growing mustaches in November as part of the "Movember" campaign. The concept is simple: You are to shave everything but the upper lip for the entire month starting November 1st.
The 24-year-old Davis was motivated by the loss of his college head coach, Jack McGetrick, in October 2010 after a two-year battle with prostate cancer. Davis completed his senior season at Bellarmine University in 2010 after an impressive four-year career.
"I want to raise awareness so it doesn't sneak up on people like it does for so many guys," said Davis, who is a member of an eight-man fundraising team called Team Muzzy Bogues.
Davis joined a team that includes his brother, Aaron, and Calgary Roughneck Curtis Dickson. The group raised $500 last year, but Jarrett wants to double that number this year. For just 66 cents per day, people can sponsor Davis to help him raise $20 this month. To donate, fans can go to www.movember.com/m/1573350. Fans can follow Davis' weekly growth via his twitter accounts at @jarrettdavis42.
Burton, 23, already has a good mustache going after just four days of growing. The second-year pro has not been personally affected by prostate cancer, but still felt the need to support the campaign.
"It looked like a good thing to do in making a difference and helping support something bigger than myself," said Burton. "It's like you are part of a team, it's in good fun and for a good cause."
Burton expects some friendly ribbing from his teammates and friends, as his facial flow expands daily. He hopes to draw attention to his mustache to increase bidding on his Movember page, http://ca.movember.com/mospace/2225624/. To date, he has raised $100.
"It will be pretty funny looking," said Burton, who already has a light mustache after one week.
Those who know the Knighthawks defenseman will remember that in the summer he sported a mountain-man sized playoff beard as the Brampton Excelsiors won the Mann Cup. So a mustache is easy.
"I can grow a pretty thick one," said Burton. "I had a pretty strong one with Brampton."
Fans can see the mustaches in-person as the Knighthawks return to town on Saturday, November 19th for Day One of Training Camp at Total Sports Experience. The first day is slated from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
